Deviled Cadbury Eggs

To many people, one of the joys of Easter time is the Cadbury egg. For one brief month out of twelve, they can find this yummy holiday treat. But I found myself wondering what else could be done with them. I ended up taking Cadbury eggs and putting a picnic favorite twist on them. This is what I came up with.

Deviled Cadburry Eggs

10 Cadbury Eggs
Buttercream Icing
Orange Sprinkles

If you don’t have my buttercream icing recipe, I make it by mixing1 stick softened butter with 1 cup confectioner’s sugar until smooth. Then I add another cup of confectioner’s sugar, beating it until fluffy. Stir in two tablespoons milk, one teaspoon vanilla and a sprinkle of salt. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

Anyway…I didn’t have any yellow food coloring with me when I made these at work. So I ended up using 1-2 drops of green and some extra vanilla to try and get a yellow tint. It came out pretty good considering.

While I made the icing, I stuck the Cadbury eggs in the refrigerator to help thicken up the “yolks.” After they were in the fridge for about an hour (no it does not take this long to make the icing) I unwrapped them all and sliced them in half lengthwise. There’s already a crack there, so it’s not too difficult. I ended up cracking a couple halves, but it’s no big loss.

See, not too complicated. Here are all my little split Cadburries.

Next, I took the icing and put it into a cake decorating bag with a 1M star tip. I simply piped the frosting on in a circular motion, similar to the way you would do it with a cupcake.

After I got done icing them I sprinkled some orange sprinkles over the top. I thought this would give the impression of paprika.

Pretty awesome, right?

Have fun making these!! They are an awesome treat to take to an Easter get together or snack day.

Gathering my thoughts and amazing deals

I’ve went four days without posting a blog. Ahhhh!! I’ve been so busy with classes and work I’ve hardly had time to think about creativity. Note: I said hardly. 🙂
I had an amazing find last night! I ran into Hobby Lobby to check out some new cake pans and found this awesome caddy for cake decorating!

As I looked at it I realized that there was no price tag and of course it was the only one. So I took it with me and my newfound cakepans (which were on clearance mind you) to the check out lane. The cashier finally got someone to answer her page for a price check and then we waited some more for the person to actually figure out what they were supposed to be looking for. Anyway, low and behold they priced it at $24.99. I was down with that and promptly pulled out a 40% off coupon to use with it, taking it down to roughly $15. Great right? Well, I was in a different Hobby Lobby today and just happened to see the same kind of tote that I had gotten last night. Any guesses on the price? $59.99!! Wow, they messed up!

On another note, I went out to dinner with a close friend of mine today and as we were sitting there eating I looked down at my plate and was struck by my muse. I had decided to try clam and had a couple mini type of shells on my plate. I thought, “Huh, I could do something with these.” With this thought I went back up to the buffet and loaded a plate with them in order to keep the shells. The empty shells are now soaking in my kitchen sink. Here’s my crazy friend playing with one. Haha, I love her.

I don’t know what I’m going to do with all these things, but I will think of something! Any ideas are welcome!

Centerpeeps :-P

Wow, this has been a crazy busy weekend! I hope everybody enjoyed theirs! This weekend I worked on the first of my Peeps creations and practiced cake decorating. The peeps centerpiece idea was a huge success and I’ve actually made a couple for other people. They’re easy and don’t take a long time. So go for it!

All of the ingredients, are–get this, edible! You can buy them just about anywhere. My chosen store was Wal-Mart. The vase is just a simple glass one, nothing too spectacular. Note that the brands I chose to use do not affect the outcome of the centerpiece as a whole. Most likely they were just the cheapest or most convenient.

The first layer to go into the vase is made of jelly beans. Starburst ones actually. 😛 Just open the bag and pour them in. It’s not an art, unless you’re overly concerned about too much of one color in a certain place. If not, whatever.

Then came the edible grass which, by the way, is pretty gross! It has little rabbits in it that I thought were not meant to be eaten, but I was wrong. Go head and chow down if you’re into that styrofoam texture. I slid the rabbits into the vase between the grass and the glass.

After I had my grass situated I slid the Peep pops in. These Peeps CAME THIS WAY. I did not skewer each individual one myself. Although, if that’s what you want to do, go for it. I’m all for cheating to make a craft easier. I enjoy creating things but I do have other stuff I should be doing. Arrange the peeps as you like. I went for five around the outside and one in the middle.

And you’re done! How easy was that? And I mean really easy, not Martha Stewart easy. You can definitely change things up with this centerpiece. If you want to use different colored grass, or M & Ms instead of jelly beans, feel free. I considered putting a pretty ribbon around the vase but decided against it in the long run. If you have any questions just leave me a message! Have fun with this one!

I’m on a mission to go to Wal-mart today. What’s at the top of my grocery list? PEEPS! I have been marveling over the many creations that can be made with these delectable little globs of marshmallow for the better part of my night. There are so many uses (edible or not), but I’ve narrowed it down to a few that just keep bouncing around in my head. And as a bonus, what better time of year to try some of these craft ideas and/or recipes than now? Hello Spring! I will keep you posted on how it’s going! Also, if you have any ideas that you’d like to see tried, let me know!

In case you’re wondering, the pillowcases are still underway! My poor finger needed a break. :-/

I got to thinking the other day that I need to be careful of the topics I blog. This is only because I know that I could easily be distracted into the world of edible creativity, leaving behind any other kind. I know that I will probably have more food blogs than other tasks, but hey, I like to eat.
I’m currently on my spring break vacation in Branson, Missouri. What better town to entice my creativity/hobby muse to come to the surface? This town is full of entertainment and bursting at the seams with creativity. I have made a promise to myself (that my dear mother rolls her eyes at) to find some sort of creative outlet while I’m here. I’m unsure of a basic topic yet, but I will find something!
We went to Silver Dollar City today, where I had my high hopes of creative idea finding dashed. Don’t get me wrong, I love going there. We have season passes and visit several times during their open season. I just didn’t find anything that screamed, “hey, check this out” or “you can do this.” But, fear not, for we are here til Saturday and I am on a mission!
